NDC Announces Date For Historic First National Convention
According to Ireporter Online, the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has announced plans to hold its maiden National Convention on May 9, 2026, in Abuja, as part of preparations ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The announcement was contained in a statement issued on Friday by the party’s Deputy National Publicity Secretary, Abdulmumin Abdulsalam, who disclosed that the party has already commenced its nationwide congresses at various levels.
He stated that ward and polling unit congresses are scheduled for May 1 and 2, followed by local government and state congresses on May 4, while zonal congresses are expected to hold on May 6, paving the way for the national convention in Abuja.
According to him, the staggered process is aimed at ensuring a structured and democratic emergence of party leadership from the grassroots to the national level, in line with the party’s constitution and internal guidelines.
Abdulsalam described the upcoming convention as a major milestone in the party’s development, noting that preparations had been concluded by the planning committee. He added that the event would bring together accredited delegates, party members, and officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), who are expected to monitor proceedings in accordance with electoral regulations.
He further assured that adequate arrangements had been made for logistics, security, and coordination across all levels of the congresses and the convention to guarantee a smooth and credible process nationwide.
Party officials at both state and national levels have also been directed to strictly adhere to the approved timetable and guidelines to ensure transparency and internal democracy throughout the exercise.
The party expressed optimism that the ongoing congresses and the forthcoming convention would strengthen its internal structures and enhance its readiness for future electoral contests.
