FG Reaffirms Commitment To Protect Schools, Pledges Safer Learning Across Nigeria

According to Ireporter Online, the Minister of Defence, Gen. Christopher Musa (retd.), has reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to ensuring the safety of schools and fostering secure learning environments nationwide.

The minister made the remarks in Abuja while receiving the Distinguished Service in National Peace and Security Merit Award from the National Parent Teachers Association of Nigeria (NAPTAN). He emphasized that security is fundamental to educational development, noting that a safe environment is essential for effective teaching and learning.

“Without security, there can be no conducive learning environment. We will continue to work seriously to ensure that our schools remain safe across the country,” Musa stated.

The minister commended parents and teachers for their pivotal role in shaping responsible citizens, describing them as the “twin pillars” of a child’s development. He highlighted that collaboration between educators and parents is crucial for building future leaders in Nigeria.

Musa expressed gratitude for the award, saying it strengthened his resolve to implement policies that promote safe, inclusive, and well-resourced schools nationwide. He also reiterated the Defence Ministry’s partnership with education stakeholders to protect schools from criminal threats and maintain progress achieved under the Safe School Programme.

NAPTAN’s National President, Haruna Danjuma, said the award recognized Musa’s “dynamic and proactive” efforts to secure schools and protect children. He recalled the launch of the Safe School initiative in 2024 and praised strategies aimed at curbing school-related insecurity. Danjuma also commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for providing the enabling environment for national security reforms in education.

The ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Mr. Richard Pheelangwa, described the award as a reflection of the strong bond between the Armed Forces, schools, and society, assuring stakeholders that the Defence Ministry would continue working with parents, teachers, and communities to safeguard schools and future generations.
