Sh*ck Exit: Presidency Reveals Why Egbetokun Resigned As IGP
The Presidency has officially confirmed the resignation of Kayode Egbetokun as the Inspector-General of Police. According to the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, Egbetokun submitted his resignation on Monday, citing pressing family matters that require his full attention.
The IGP resigned in a letter today, citing family issues which require his undivided attention,” Onanuga said. Sources indicate that Egbetokun’s resignation followed a private meeting with President Bola Tinubu at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, where he was reportedly asked to step aside.
Tunji Disu, the Assistant Inspector-General of Police in charge of the Force Criminal Investigation Department Annex in Alagbon, Lagos, is expected to succeed him. Egbetokun had been appointed Inspector-General of Police on June 19, 2023, having previously served as Deputy Inspector-General in charge of the Force Criminal Investigations Department. He took over from Usman Alkali Baba, whose tenure concluded in September 2023 following an extension granted by former President Muhammadu Buhari.
In a related development, at least 29 senior police officers, including Deputy and Assistant Inspectors-General, are reportedly set to be removed from their positions as part of a broader restructuring of the Nigeria Police Force. Sources within the Nigeria Police Force and the Police Service Commission told Sahara Reporters that the shake-up is expected to follow the exit of Egbetokun.
