Tinubu Reveals How Britain Helped Him Flee Abacha’s Regime

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has recounted his experiences in exile during Nigeria’s military era, revealing how he found refuge in the United Kingdom while actively participating in the pro-democracy movement.

According to Ireporter Online, Tinubu made the remarks on Wednesday during a state banquet at Windsor Castle, addressing members of the British royal family. He expressed gratitude for the protection he received while under threat from Nigeria’s military regime.

“Like many Nigerians involved in the pro-democracy struggle, I found safety here, and my residence was placed under Metropolitan Police surveillance following threats from agents of the junta,” the President stated.

Tinubu went into exile during the regime of Sani Abacha from 1993 to 1998, following the annulment of the June 12, 1993 presidential election, a defining moment in Nigeria’s political history. He described that period as pivotal in shaping his political journey.

Reflecting on the royal banquet, Tinubu said the occasion highlighted Nigeria’s democratic progress. “That solidarity remains etched in our collective memory, and it is deeply humbling for me to stand before Your Majesty today as the President of a democratic Nigeria,” he added.

The President delivered his speech before King Charles III, Queen Camilla, Prince William, and Catherine, Princess of Wales, as part of a diplomatic visit aimed at strengthening Nigeria–UK relations. He emphasized shared democratic values, legal traditions, and institutional frameworks between the two countries.

Tinubu also praised Nigerians residing in the UK, particularly those contributing to the National Health Service, as well as Nigerians excelling in sports and other sectors. He noted that their achievements continue to strengthen bilateral relations and enhance Nigeria’s global image.
