Atlético Madrid coach Diego Simeone has lauded Ademola Lookman despite his side’s 3-2 defeat to Real Madrid in Sunday’s La Liga derby.

Lookman opened the scoring in the 33rd minute, netting his first goal in a Madrid derby after a precise backheel from Giuliano Simeone, giving Atlético a halftime lead. Real Madrid struck back in the second half, with Vinícius Júnior scoring twice and Federico Valverde adding another, while Nahuel Molina briefly equalized for Atlético with a long-range effort.

After the match, Simeone praised Lookman’s development and commitment but emphasized the need for improvement in his defensive duties. “Lookman is improving, he’s been working very hard. He’s played in different attacking roles, and we need him to continue doing that. We’re also helping him improve defensively to support the team,” Simeone said. “He’s a young player with a big heart and a strong desire to learn and get better. Hopefully, he’ll continue contributing important moments like he did today.”

Lookman was substituted early in the second half as Simeone reshuffled his side. The forward’s goal made history, as he became the first Nigerian to score in a Madrid derby and only the eighth Atlético player this century to score on debut in the fixture. Lookman now has nine goal involvements in 14 appearances for the club.
