Seyi Makinde and Nyesom Wike

According to Ireporter Online, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has criticized the Governor of Oyo State, Seyi Makinde, suggesting that Makinde should have stayed out of politics if he was not prepared for the realities of political life.

Speaking on Monday at the 107th National Executive Committee meeting of his faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Abuja, Wike noted that Makinde could have remained a contractor rather than entering the political arena. The Minister, who has had ongoing tensions with Makinde, told him to “go home and rest,” highlighting that most PDP governors have since defected to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

This remark came shortly after Makinde publicly accused Wike of undermining the PDP to favor President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 elections. Makinde made these comments during a meeting with Bauchi State Governor, Bala Mohammed, on Sunday in Bauchi.

Addressing the wave of defections from the PDP, Wike questioned the credibility of those who accused him of collaborating with the APC, emphasizing that he has remained committed to the party. He further explained that despite the defections, he is open to reconciliation, which he said will continue even after the upcoming PDP National Convention.

Wike remarked, “They accused me of working for the APC. Where are they today? We had 13 governors… today, how many remain? They all left because they were defeated. I watched my friend, Seyi Makinde, during his visit to Bauchi State… You wanted to be a contractor, and I wanted power. You got contracts from Chevron—why didn’t you stay there and leave us to do our work? If you are not ready to play, go home and rest. We are ready for sleepless nights. No blackmail will change us. Even if we have two senators, it is better to have two quality people than a multitude. I said I was not leaving the party, and I will not. True reconciliation remains our goal, even after the convention.”
