FG Issues Stark Warning: 226 LGAs May Suffer Serious Flooding In 2026

The Federal Government has revealed that at least 226 Local Government Areas across 33 states and the Federal Capital Territory have been identified as high-risk zones for flooding in 2026, raising fresh concerns over potential nationwide environmental challenges. According to Ireporter Online, the disclosure was made by the Minister of Water Resources and Sanitation, Joseph Utsev, during the presentation of the 2026 Annual Flood Outlook by the Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency in Abuja.

The minister explained that thousands of communities are expected to be directly impacted, noting that over 14,000 communities spread across 266 local government areas in 33 states and the FCT fall within severe flood risk zones. The affected states include Abia, Adamawa, Anambra, Bauchi, Bayelsa, Benue, Borno, Cross River, Delta, Ebonyi, Edo, Enugu, Gombe, Imo, Jigawa, Kaduna, Kano, Kebbi, Kogi, Kwara, Lagos, Nasarawa, Niger, Ogun, Ondo, Osun, Oyo, Plateau, Rivers, Sokoto, Taraba, Yobe, Zamfara, alongside the Federal Capital Territory.

Further analysis presented at the event indicated that 405 local government areas across 35 states fall within the moderate flood risk category, with only Ekiti State excluded, highlighting the widespread vulnerability of many regions to flooding. Meanwhile, projections also show that minimal flooding is expected in 923 communities across 77 local government areas in 24 states, suggesting that while some areas may experience less severe impact, risks remain present nationwide.

Utsev also announced the introduction of a new community-based flood forecasting system designed to provide more localized and precise predictions, enabling quicker emergency responses and more targeted interventions in vulnerable communities.

Speaking at the event, President Bola Tinubu reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to strengthening disaster preparedness and response mechanisms. Represented by the Minister of Environment, Balarabe Lawal, the President emphasized that the government has undertaken critical assessments to address existing challenges while enhancing the capacity of relevant agencies to respond swiftly to emergencies.

He stressed that improved coordination, strategic planning, and effective communication are essential to mitigating disasters and ensuring sustainable development. Tinubu further expressed confidence that with better planning and collaboration, the country would be better positioned to manage environmental threats and safeguard citizens.

The event, themed “Smart Water Resources Management: Moving From Oil To A Water-Based Economy,” drew participation from top government officials, policymakers, and stakeholders in the environmental and water resources sectors.
