Kano Assembly To Screen Garo As Deputy Governor Nominee On Monday

The Kano State House of Assembly has scheduled Monday for the screening of Murtala Garo, who has been nominated by Governor Abba Yusuf for the position of deputy governor.

According to Ireporter Online, this was disclosed in a statement issued on Wednesday by Kamaludden Shawai, spokesperson to the Speaker, Jibril Falgore, confirming that the Assembly has officially received the governor’s communication on the nomination.

The statement noted that the screening process is part of the constitutional requirements for the confirmation of the nominee, adding that lawmakers will thoroughly examine Garo’s suitability for the office during the session slated for Monday.

It further revealed that Governor Yusuf had formally forwarded Garo’s name to the Assembly in line with Section 191(3) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), which allows a governor to nominate a deputy in the event of a vacancy. The governor, through his Chief Press Secretary, Mustapha Muhammad, explained that the decision followed wide consultations with relevant stakeholders and urged the Assembly to grant swift approval.

The deputy governorship position became vacant following the resignation of Abdussalam Gwarzo on March 27, 2026.

Garo, a seasoned politician with over 20 years of public service experience, has previously served in various capacities including state organising secretary of his party, special adviser to the governor, chairman of Kabo Local Government Area, chairman of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria in Kano State, and commissioner for local government and chieftaincy affairs. He also contested as the deputy governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress in the 2023 general elections.

The nomination is seen as part of ongoing efforts by the Yusuf administration to reinforce governance structures and enhance effective service delivery in Kano State.
