Xavi Hernández: Football Cannot Produce Another Lionel Messi, He Insists

Former FC Barcelona manager, Xavi Hernández, has stated that football may never witness another player like Lionel Messi, describing the Argentine superstar as a once-in-a-generation talent whose influence and dominance across all areas of the game remain unmatched.

According to Ireporter Online, Xavi made the remarks during an interview on Brazilian football legend Romário’s YouTube channel, where he reflected on his 15-year experience playing alongside Messi at Barcelona. He emphasized that even the arrival of other global stars such as Neymar did not come close to replicating Messi’s level of impact.

Xavi praised Messi’s exceptional all-round abilities, noting that the forward excelled in technique, physical strength, game intelligence, aerial ability, weaker foot precision, and mentality. He described the eight-time Ballon d’Or winner as a “competitive animal” and “unbeatable” on the pitch.

“I hope I’m wrong because I’d like them to improve Messi, but I don’t think it’s going to happen. I lived with Leo every day for 15 years, and he was the best at everything,” Xavi said.

He further highlighted Messi’s unique ability to elevate the performance of those around him, adding that his presence on the pitch made teammates better players. Xavi also recalled first seeing Messi at age 16, calling him “from another planet” while praising his humility and professionalism.

The former Barcelona coach also revealed he once attempted to bring Messi back to the club, but the move was ultimately blocked by the club’s leadership.

Xavi’s comments reignite the ongoing debate over Messi’s legacy in football history, as the Spanish tactician witnessed the forward’s evolution from a teenage prospect into a global icon during Barcelona’s most successful era.

Messi currently plays for Major League Soccer side Inter Miami and remains in contention to represent Argentina at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
