Tobi Amusan Headlines Nigeria’s 45-Member Squad For African Championships In Accra
According to Ireporter Online, world record holder Tobi Amusan will spearhead Nigeria’s 45-athlete contingent to the Confederation of African Athletics (CAA) Senior Championships scheduled to take place in Accra, Ghana.
The Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) has confirmed a squad comprising 25 women and 20 men for the competition, set to hold from May 12 to 17 at the University of Ghana Sports Complex.
Amusan will compete in the women’s 100m hurdles alongside Adaobi Tabugbo and Janet Sunday, as Nigeria looks to dominate the track events. Sprint star Rosemary Chukwuma also returns to international action after missing the World Relays in Gaborone and will feature in the 100m as well as the women’s 4x100m relay team, which includes Miracle Ezechukwu, Maria Thompson-Omokwe, and Tejiri Ugoh.
The women’s lineup further features Patience Okon-George in the 400m, Ruth Usoro in the long jump, and Oyesade Olatoye in the hammer throw. However, notable absentees include long jump record holder Ese Brume and discus specialist Chioma Onyekwere, who has recently shifted focus toward weightlifting in preparation for the Commonwealth Games.
On the men’s side, Nigeria will be led by sprinter Favour Ashe and shot put star Chukwuebuka Enekwechi. The sprint team also includes Enoch Adegoke, Usheoritse Itsekiri, and Chidera Ezeakor, while Samson Nathaniel, Emmanuel Ojeli, and Chidi Okezie will feature prominently in the 400m and relay events. Field event representation includes Romeo Bernard, Emmanuel Audu, and javelin thrower Adams Samuel Kure.
A key highlight of the squad is the inclusion of decathlon national record holder Jami Schlueter, who will make his senior championship debut for Nigeria after switching allegiance from Great Britain. Schlueter recently set a national indoor heptathlon record of 5,871 points in Indianapolis, a performance that places him second on Africa’s all-time list.
