Ex-UNICAL VC Akpagu Quits ADC In Surprise Move
According to Ireporter Online, former Vice-Chancellor of the University of Calabar, Professor Zana Akpagu, has officially resigned his membership of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), citing unresolved court cases and ongoing legal uncertainties affecting the party.
Akpagu’s resignation was contained in a letter dated April 26, 2026, which was made available to journalists on Friday in Calabar, Cross River State. The letter was addressed to the ADC Chairman of Ipong Ward in Obudu Local Government Area, Pastor Emmanuel Ugar Ugwakong.
In the correspondence, the former university administrator stated that his decision followed extensive consultations with his family, friends, associates, and political supporters. He noted that the growing legal disputes and unsettled court cases surrounding the party had created a level of uncertainty that made his continued membership untenable.
He wrote that he was formally withdrawing his membership of the ADC with immediate effect, stressing that the move was informed by the prevailing legal challenges confronting the party structure.
Akpagu also expressed gratitude to members of the party for their support during his time in the ADC, appreciating their understanding and cooperation throughout his engagement with the political platform.
The resignation letter was duly received and acknowledged by party officials. However, Akpagu did not indicate his next political affiliation or future political direction.
The former Vice-Chancellor served as the head of the University of Calabar between 2015 and 2020 and is also a Professor of African and Caribbean Literatures in French.
