A governorship aspirant in Abia State, Mascot Uzor Kalu, who is the younger brother of Senator Orji Uzor Kalu, has withdrawn from the All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship primary scheduled for Thursday, May 21, 2026.

According to Ireporter Online, Kalu made his decision known in a letter dated May 20, 2026, which was addressed to the APC National Chairman through the Abia State Chairman of the party. He stated that his withdrawal followed wide consultations with family members, close associates, and key political stakeholders across the state.

He noted that although the decision was a difficult one, it was taken in the interest of fairness, equity, and the overall unity of the party in Abia State. Kalu further explained that his decision was influenced by the emergence of his brother, Senator Orji Uzor Kalu, as the APC senatorial candidate, adding that stepping aside would allow other aspirants a fair chance to contest for the governorship ticket.

He also argued that the Abia Central Senatorial District should be allowed to complete what he described as its “eight years of power rotation,” stressing the need to uphold equity in the state’s political arrangement. Mascot Kalu reaffirmed his loyalty to the APC and urged his supporters to remain committed to the party and continue participating actively in its activities and future engagements.
