Why I Quit Acting — Nollywood Star Deyemi Okanlawon Opens Up
Nollywood actor Deyemi Okanlawon has revealed that he temporarily stepped away from acting in 2019 due to poor remuneration and a lack of professional satisfaction.
According to reports, the actor made the disclosure during a recent appearance on the CreativiTea podcast, where he reflected on the challenges he faced in the film industry at the time.
Speaking about his decision, Okanlawon explained that the financial rewards and the quality of work available were discouraging, leaving him unfulfilled despite his passion for acting. He noted that the situation eventually pushed him to return to his previous corporate career.
He stated that he found it difficult to remain motivated when the profession no longer provided a sense of purpose or fulfillment, adding that he believed leaving a stable 9-to-5 job for work he considered mediocre was not worthwhile.
In a separate interview with Dear Ife, the actor also opened up about how he copes with emotional pressure and the importance of having a dependable support system.
Okanlawon disclosed that his wife is usually the first person he turns to during difficult moments. However, he explained that he tries not to burden her frequently because of her demanding schedule and the responsibilities she carries in managing their home and family.
He revealed that on the rare occasions when the pressure becomes overwhelming, he sometimes wakes her up at night to seek comfort and share his concerns.
Beyond relying on his wife, the actor said he has intentionally built a strong network of support that includes a therapist, mentors, and trusted friends who provide guidance and encouragement whenever needed.
He stressed that men should not attempt to shoulder every burden alone, warning that doing so can become emotionally overwhelming and emphasizing the importance of seeking help when necessary.
