NDLEA Takes Over 6,778.5kg Of Canad!an Loud Seized At Lagos Port

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has officially taken custody of 6,778.5 kilograms of Canadian Loud, a high-grade strain of cannabis, following its interception during a coordinated security operation at Apapa Port in Lagos.

According to Ireporter Online, the illicit shipment was uncovered after a joint examination of two containers by operatives of the NDLEA, the Nigeria Customs Service, and other security agencies, in what authorities described as a significant blow to international drug trafficking syndicates.

Speaking during the handover ceremony at Apapa Port on Wednesday, NDLEA Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Brig. Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa (Rtd), represented by the agency’s Director of Seaport Operations, ACGN Ibinabo Archie-Abia, said the successful operation underscored the effectiveness of intelligence sharing and collaboration among security agencies.

Marwa stated that the two major seizures, recorded on June 15 and June 24, 2026, demonstrate the agency’s renewed determination to dismantle organised criminal networks involved in drug trafficking within and outside Nigeria’s borders.

He disclosed that the operation was the culmination of months of intelligence gathering conducted by the NDLEA’s Special Investigation Unit and Marine Intelligence Unit in partnership with the Royal Canadian Mounted Police and the Nigeria Customs Service.

According to him, the traffickers adopted complex international shipping routes in an attempt to evade security surveillance. However, intelligence operatives successfully tracked the containers across multiple countries before intercepting them upon arrival in Lagos.

Marwa explained that the first container departed Toronto on April 16, 2026, before being transported by rail to Montreal and shipped through Morocco en route to Tin Can Island Port. It was later transferred to the Global Bonded Terminal and subsequently moved to Apapa Port, where security operatives intercepted it during a joint inspection.

He added that the second container left Montreal on May 1 aboard the Africa Express, was later trans-shipped onto another vessel, and eventually arrived at Tin Can Island Port before being transferred to Apapa Port, where officers intercepted it on June 22.

The NDLEA boss stressed that the agency’s efforts extend beyond intercepting narcotics, noting that investigations would continue to identify, arrest and prosecute those behind the shipment while tracing and confiscating assets acquired through proceeds of drug trafficking.

He described the enormous profits generated by illicit drug trafficking as a major driver of criminal activities, insisting that those responsible would be denied every benefit from their illegal operations.

Marwa also commended officers of the NDLEA, the Nigeria Customs Service and other participating security agencies for their professionalism, commitment and vigilance, stating that their collective efforts prevented the dangerous substances from reaching Nigerian communities.

He further noted that the success of the operation highlights the importance of intelligence-led policing, inter-agency cooperation and international partnerships in combating transnational organised crime and disrupting global drug trafficking networks.
