Oyo Schools Resume As NUT Calls Off One-Month Strike

According to Ireporter Online, the union had directed teachers in public primary and secondary schools to withdraw their services from June 1 in protest over the kidnapping incident that affected three schools in the area.

The NUT President, Titus Amba, confirmed that the industrial action was called off after extensive dialogue with the state government and in consideration of pupils who had been out of school since the commencement of the strike.

Amba explained that the union took the decision to resume duties after achieving what he described as solidarity with affected colleagues while also prioritising the education of young learners who had remained at home.

In an official statement issued by the Oyo State NUT Chairman, Hassan Fatai, and Secretary, Olukayode Salami, teachers across the state were directed to resume academic duties on Thursday, July 2, 2026.

The statement further noted that the state government had assured the union of intensified efforts to rescue the abducted victims, improve security in schools, and provide support for families affected by the incident.

Reacting to the development, the Oyo State Commissioner for Information, Dotun Oyelade, commended the union for suspending the strike, describing the decision as one that helped prevent further social and educational disruption in the state.

The strike was declared following the abduction incident which occurred on May 15, 2026, when armed men invaded three schools in the Esiele and Yawota communities, leading to widespread concern over safety in educational institutions.
