Oyo Abduction: Presidency Responds To Hostage K!ll!ng, Raises Airstrike Question
According to Ireporter Online, the Special Adviser to President Bola Tinubu on Policy Communication, Daniel Bwala, has defended the Federal Government’s approach to the abduction of pupils and teachers in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State, insisting that the safety of the remaining hostages remains the government’s foremost concern.
Speaking during an interview on the Morayo Show on Wednesday, Bwala dismissed suggestions that the government should immediately launch military strikes on locations suspected to be housing the kidnappers, warning that such action could place the lives of the captives in greater danger.
He explained that in hostage situations, the primary responsibility of any government is to ensure that victims are rescued alive rather than resorting to force that could lead to unintended casualties. According to him, deploying lethal force without certainty could jeopardise the lives of those still in captivity.
Bwala acknowledged reports that one of the hostages had been killed but maintained that authorities were focused on securing the safe release of the remaining victims. He stressed that preserving the lives of those still being held was more important than responding to public criticism or pressure.
The presidential aide also assured Nigerians that the government was monitoring the situation closely and had information indicating that the remaining captives were alive. He reiterated that every effort was being directed toward bringing them home safely.
Responding to questions about whether the killing of one hostage should prompt a more aggressive military response, Bwala challenged the idea of bombing suspected hideouts, asking whether such an operation would be justified despite the likelihood of putting the lives of the remaining hostages at even greater risk.
