The United States government has continued its review of the Temporary Protected Status (TPS) programme, with nationals of 12 countries affected by recent termination decisions.

According to Ireporter Online, the latest review has affected four African countries — Somalia, South Sudan, Cameroon and Ethiopia — alongside nationals of several other countries.

The decisions followed assessments of conditions in the affected countries by the US Department of Homeland Security, which determined that some no longer met the legal requirements for continued TPS designation.

The latest developments have seen Somalia and South Sudan lose their TPS designations, with the termination for South Sudan taking effect on August 7, 2026, while Somalia’s designation ended on August 14, 2026.

US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) said the decisions followed reviews of conditions in the countries and consultations with relevant US government agencies.

TPS is a temporary humanitarian immigration protection granted to eligible nationals of designated countries experiencing circumstances such as armed conflict, natural disasters or other conditions that make returning unsafe.

Beneficiaries of the programme may receive protection from removal, employment authorisation and, where approved, travel authorisation during the period of designation. However, TPS does not automatically provide permanent residency or another immigration status.

The latest update also indicates that the status of some countries remains affected by ongoing legal proceedings. Court actions have, for instance, delayed or placed restrictions on the implementation of certain TPS termination decisions involving Ethiopia, Honduras, Nepal and Nicaragua.

The termination of TPS does not automatically mean that every affected individual will be deported, as eligible beneficiaries may be able to pursue other lawful immigration options under US immigration rules.

The countries listed as affected by TPS termination decisions are:

  1. Haiti
  2. Syria
  3. Yemen
  4. Afghanistan
  5. Cameroon
  6. Nepal
  7. Honduras
  8. Nicaragua
  9. Venezuela
  10. South Sudan
  11. Myanmar
  12. Somalia
