Centre Urges Nigerians To Protect Their Votes Ahead Of 2027 Elections

The Centre for Better Society in Nigeria, a human rights organisation, has urged Nigerians to take greater responsibility for protecting their votes ahead of the 2027 general elections.

According to Ireporter Online, the group said democracy could only be strengthened when citizens recognise that their ballots belong to them and should not be controlled by political godfathers, wealthy individuals or other financial interests.

The organisation said recent electoral developments in Osun State provided important lessons about the growing political awareness of Nigerian voters and their willingness to defend their choices at the polls.

It noted reports that some voters accepted financial inducements from different political actors but ultimately voted according to their conscience, describing the development as an indication of the complex nature of Nigeria’s electoral environment.

The group also commended citizens who monitored the electoral process beyond the polling units, particularly by following vote counting and the collation of results.

It said the public intervention of music star Davido, who spoke in support of protecting the electoral mandate of the incumbent governor, further highlighted the role individuals can play in promoting electoral integrity.

Ahead of the 2027 elections, the organisation urged voters to remain peacefully engaged throughout the electoral process by observing the counting of votes, monitoring result declarations and ensuring their ballots are properly accounted for during collation.

It, however, stressed that such civic participation must remain within the law and should not result in confrontation or violence.

The group also called on electoral officials to uphold their responsibility to Nigerians by ensuring that declared results accurately reflect votes cast, irrespective of political pressure or financial inducements.

It warned that compromising electoral integrity for immediate financial gain could have consequences beyond individual voters, including weakening public confidence in democratic institutions.

The organisation said the experience in Osun should serve as a reference point for future elections, arguing that an informed, organised and vigilant electorate could reduce the influence of money and political structures on electoral outcomes.

It maintained that while political spending could influence some voters, it could not permanently determine their choices.

The group therefore urged Nigerians to approach the 2027 elections with a stronger sense of civic responsibility by voting, protecting their ballots peacefully, demanding transparency and holding public institutions accountable through lawful democratic processes.

“We may not yet have arrived at the democracy Nigerians desire, but the signs are encouraging,” the group said.
