The Benue State Police Command has commenced an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the reported blockade of the convoy of Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate Peter Obi in Makurdi.

According to Ireporter Online, the incident occurred on Tuesday along the Gboko-Makurdi Expressway shortly after Obi arrived in the Benue State capital.

Obi, a former governor of Anambra State, was reportedly travelling to Yelwata to visit communities affected by the deadly attack of June 13, 2025, when his convoy was stopped by some youths.

The police confirmed that its operatives were providing security for Obi’s movement at the time of the incident.

However, the command said it was yet to establish why the youths blocked the convoy or determine the circumstances that led to the development.

The Police Public Relations Officer in Benue, DSP Peter Orchia Aondongu, said the command was aware of the incident and had begun investigating the matter.

“We can confirm that the Police are aware of the incident involving Peter Obi’s movement to Yelwata. Police operatives provided security for the movement,” Aondongu said.

He added that the reason the convoy was blocked remained unknown, noting that officers were monitoring the situation and investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident.
