Former DSS Director-General D!es In Lagos

Former Director-General of the Department of State Services (DSS), Chief Albert Korubo Horsfall, has died at the age of 84.

According to Ireporter Online, Horsfall died on Wednesday, September 9, 2026, at a hospital in Lagos following a prolonged illness.

Horsfall served as Director-General of the State Security Service (SSS), now known as the DSS, between 1990 and 1992. He was also the pioneer Director-General of the National Intelligence Agency (NIA), where he played a significant role in the development of Nigeria’s modern intelligence architecture.

Before attaining senior positions within Nigeria’s intelligence community, Horsfall served as a police officer and was among the founding personnel of the former National Security Organisation (NSO).

Following his years in the intelligence and security sector, he was appointed the pioneer chairman of the Oil Mineral Producing Areas Development Commission (OMPADEC), where he contributed to development initiatives in oil-producing communities across the Niger Delta.

His career in public service spanned several decades, with responsibilities covering national security, intelligence and development in the Niger Delta region.

The current Director-General of the DSS, Adeola Ajayi, confirmed Horsfall’s death in a statement issued on Friday.

Ajayi expressed condolences to Horsfall’s family, the Rivers State Government, the Ijaw nation and Nigerians, describing the late intelligence chief as a patriot and exceptional public servant.

He said Horsfall devoted his life to the security and development of Nigeria and described him as a pioneer who contributed significantly to the country’s modern intelligence system.

Ajayi also prayed for the repose of Horsfall’s soul, paying tribute to his decades of service to the nation.
