Cooking Gas Price Rises To ₦1,300 Per Kg, Raising Fresh Concerns
The price of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG), popularly known as cooking gas, has risen to about ₦1,300 per kilogramme in Lagos, representing an 8.3 per cent increase from the ₦1,200 recorded in August 2026.
According to reports, checks across Lagos showed variations in the retail price of cooking gas, with accredited outlets selling for about ₦1,300 per kilogramme, while some smaller plants charged between ₦1,350 and ₦1,400, depending on location. Dealers also indicated that prices were higher in some other parts of the country.
The National President of the Nigerian Association of Liquefied Petroleum Gas Marketers, Inyang Edu, attributed the latest increase to a combination of international and domestic factors affecting the LPG supply chain.
Edu said global geopolitical tensions, including the conflict involving the United States and Iran, had increased volatility in international energy markets, with the impact being felt through international energy prices, shipping and insurance costs, foreign exchange exposure, domestic transportation and local LPG supply.
He explained that rising replacement costs at depots had pushed up expenses for marketers, who must also account for transportation, loading, financing, plant operations, personnel, maintenance and other logistics before the product reaches consumers.
“The immediate consequence is that the cost of LPG has increased along the entire supply chain—from the depot to the LPG plant and ultimately to the consumer,” Edu said.
He noted that the rising cost of cooking gas was particularly concerning because millions of Nigerian households and businesses, including restaurants, bakeries, food vendors, schools and hotels, now depend on LPG.
Edu warned that continued increases could force some households to reduce their gas consumption or return to alternative fuels such as firewood and charcoal, potentially undermining Nigeria’s clean-cooking objectives and creating environmental and public-health concerns.
He also pointed to domestic supply challenges, noting that the Nigeria Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA) reported in June 2026 that the country had recorded a year-to-date LPG supply deficit of about 91,966 metric tonnes.
According to Edu, the deficit showed that Nigeria’s domestic LPG market was facing structural supply constraints alongside international price pressures.
He further explained that depot prices could fluctuate depending on product availability, source of supply, location, logistics and commercial arrangements between suppliers and buyers.
Edu said available market information as of September 16, 2026, showed that 20 metric tonnes of LPG in the Lagos market were selling for between ₦20 million and ₦22.7 million, depending on the supplier and depot.
He disclosed that current market listings indicated prices of approximately ₦22 million at Ardova, ₦22.7 million at Stockgap and about ₦20 million at Panocean.
He added that some other market listings placed the price of 20 metric tonnes between ₦19.9 million and ₦20.3 million, underscoring the variation in LPG prices across suppliers and locations.
