According to Ireporter Online, the Special Adviser to President Bola Tinubu on Economic Affairs, Tope Fasua, has advised Nigerians to adjust their spending habits in line with their income, urging citizens to “cut their coat according to their size” amid ongoing economic pressures in the country.

Fasua made the remarks during a members-only Coffee Hangout organised by the Kay Hikers Club in Abuja, where he engaged participants in a heated discussion on Nigeria’s rising cost of living, insecurity, and declining purchasing power. During the session, a female attendee expressed concerns over the increasing cost of basic necessities, arguing that many households could no longer afford essential food items.

Responding, Fasua acknowledged the rise in prices but maintained that Nigerians could still manage their resources if they adopted more disciplined financial habits. He stated that a modest family could sustain itself on ₦10,000 for several days with proper planning, stressing the importance of prudent spending.

He further encouraged citizens to be intentional with their purchases, noting that he personally engages in market shopping and understands current price trends in areas such as Utako and Wuse markets in Abuja. According to him, careful selection and home cooking could help families manage food costs more effectively.

Fasua also emphasised that while economic conditions remain challenging, the government cannot be solely responsible for meeting all expectations, insisting that citizens must adapt to prevailing realities.

“I know things are more expensive than before, but if we want sensation, government will never win,” he was quoted as saying.
