10,000 Take To The Streets In Riesa: AfDs Rise Sparks Nationwide Outrage

According to state police reports, over 10,000 protesters had been anticipated prior to the event. During the demonstrations, authorities recorded 34 offenses, and six police officers sustained minor injuries.

Police Chief Lutz Rodig highlighted the constitutional right to peaceful assembly under Article 8, Paragraph 1 of Germany’s Basic Law. He also stressed the police’s obligation to protect all federal party events, regardless of political affiliation, as mandated by the constitution.

The Basic Law allows only the Federal Constitutional Court to ban political parties, under Article 21, Paragraph 2. In a significant move last year, 113 federal lawmakers filed an application to declare the AfD unconstitutional and seize its assets, citing concerns about its alignment with democratic principles.

The AfD is known for its far-right policies, Euroskepticism, and anti-immigration rhetoric. In January 2024, revelations of the party’s plans for mass deportations triggered widespread protests in 114 cities across Germany.

The demonstrations in Riesa occur amid political turmoil in Germany. In December, Chancellor Olaf Scholz dissolved the Parliament and called for new elections, following the collapse of his coalition government and a failed confidence vote under Article 68 of the Basic Law. With the AfD gaining momentum after its state election victory in Thuringia last year, many fear the party could further consolidate power in the upcoming federal elections.
