Progress in the negotiations has been attributed to the involvement of Biden’s Middle East envoy, Brett McGurk, who has arrived in Qatar. Officials aim to finalize an agreement before President-elect Donald Trump’s inauguration on January 20.

The unified stance between the Biden and Trump teams signals to Hamas that U.S. policy remains consistent. Steve Witkoff, Trump’s incoming Middle East envoy, echoed similar timelines after visits to both Israel and Qatar.

In response, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has approved the departure of a high-ranking delegation—including Mossad Director David Barnea and Shin Bet Chief Ronen Bar—for talks in Doha. However, members of Israel’s Security Cabinet remain excluded from the discussions, causing internal tensions.

The decision to send the Israeli delegation comes after prolonged delays and a conference call between Netanyahu, McGurk, and Witkoff. A senior Israeli official expressed cautious optimism, saying, “It feels closer than ever,” but warned against premature conclusions.

The Hostages and Missing Persons Families Forum has welcomed the initiative, urging negotiators to seize the moment and ensure the return of all hostages, alive or deceased.
