2024: Mixed Emotions In Sports
A toxic blend of poor talent management and disorganized preparations, despite sufficient funding, turned Nigeria into a target of ridicule on the global sports stage…READ MORE…
As 2024 rapidly approaches its conclusion, true to Nigeria’s tradition, the year has been marked by significant highs and lows in the country’s sports scene.
After a disappointing Olympic performance, expectations were understandably low for 2024.
Football and basketball brought a mix of joy and despair, but the standout highlight of the year came from the 2024 CAF Awards, where Nigerian star Ademola Lookman stepped into the limelight as the African Footballer of the Year, following Victor Osimhen.
Lookman has truly separated himself from the competition over the past year, and his remarkable performances made him the clear favorite for this prestigious award. He consistently showcased his talent while representing both Nigeria and Atalanta, leading Nigeria to the AFCON final in February and playing a critical role in guiding Atalanta to their first-ever UEFA Europa League final in May, where he scored a breathtaking hat-trick against the previously undefeated Bayer Leverkusen.
Breaking the mold typical of many award winners from Europe’s elite clubs, Lookman delivered outstanding performances with Atalanta, a team that had not secured major trophies before his transformative contributions. His brilliance in the UEFA Europa League final solidified his status as one of the brightest talents of the year.
The CAF award covered performances from January to October 2024, further emphasizing Lookman’s excellence. During this timeframe, he netted 22 goals and provided 18 assists, shining as a winger and versatile forward. His form consistently uplifted both Atalanta and Nigeria, making him an instrumental figure for both.
Lookman’s extraordinary accomplishments also earned him the honor of being the only African player nominated for the 2024 Ballon d’Or, where he finished 14th, underscoring his remarkable status.
As the new King of African football, Lookman’s grace and talent uplifted an otherwise bleak sporting year for Nigeria, which had been marred by sighs and feelings of regret.
His victory in Marrakech, Morocco, was a much-needed boost, doubling our joy and alleviating our sorrows. As the year began to dwindle, Lookman’s success reignited hope among Nigerians, illuminating the darkness that threatened to overshadow the sporting landscape.
However, the Olympic Games, regarded as the premier global sporting event, brought its own chaos for Team Nigeria. Star athlete Favour Ofili, who had qualified for the 100m race, found herself unexpectedly removed from the lineup. As smaller countries celebrated their medal wins, Nigeria was embroiled in public disputes. Ese Ukpeseraye shared the disheartening experience of competing on a borrowed bicycle for the Keirin and sprint events at the Paris Olympics, having lacked the necessary equipment to participate.
The disillusionment surrounding Team Nigeria at the Paris 2024 Olympics is a bitter pill to swallow, with the team returning home empty-handed, having secured no medals despite the hype generated by both the government and the athletes themselves.
