2027 Alert: APC Urges INEC To Deregister ADC, Citing “Clustered Ballot Papers
According to Ireporter Online, the National Secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Ajibola Basiru, has called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to deregister the African Democratic Congress (ADC) ahead of the 2027 elections. Speaking in an interview on Arise Television on Friday, Basiru explained that the APC seeks to prevent ballot papers from being crowded with political parties considered nonviable.
Basiru emphasized that the party is unfazed by accusations of advocating a one-party state, noting that Nigeria currently has about 19 registered political parties, although some fail to meet the threshold for electoral relevance. He stressed that the APC, as a legally registered party, has a duty to ensure that all institutions comply with the law.
“We’re calling on INEC to deregister the ADC. We don’t want ballot papers to be clustered with unviable political parties,” Basiru stated. He added that the Nigerian constitution provides clear guidelines on party registration and electoral thresholds, and parties failing to meet these standards should be deregistered.
Basiru described the ADC as generating more noise than meaningful political action, referring to it as part of a “coalition of confusion.” He noted ongoing court cases supporting deregistration and urged INEC to exercise its statutory powers in this regard.
