2027: Nasarawa APC Goes Direct Primary, Governorship Seat Zoned To West
Stakeholders of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Nasarawa State have endorsed the direct primary method for the upcoming governorship primary election as part of efforts to enhance inclusiveness and strengthen party unity ahead of the 2027 polls.
The decision emerged during a high-level meeting attended by governorship aspirants, National Assembly members, and other key party stakeholders.
Governor Abdullahi Sule, addressing the gathering, described the move as a reflection of the collective will of party members and in line with democratic principles being promoted nationally. He emphasized that the adoption of a direct primary would allow all registered party members to participate in selecting the party’s governorship candidate.
According to Sule, the majority of stakeholders were in support of the process, which also aligns with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s advocacy for expanded internal democracy within political parties. The governor assured that the primary would be conducted transparently and credibly, in strict accordance with the party constitution and the Electoral Act.
“Nobody whatsoever will have any excuse to leave the party, because we are going to have a very transparent, very democratic process. So the person who leaves after losing is leaving because he does not know how to lose,” Sule stated.
On the issue of zoning, the governor declared that the governorship slot should be allocated to the Nasarawa West Senatorial Zone to ensure fairness and equity. He highlighted that the decision was guided by a spirit of brotherhood and the need for all regions of the state to feel represented.
“I stand by this in line with the spirit of brotherhood. Let us take it to Keffi Zone, which has not produced a governor for twenty years,” Sule added.
The governor commended stakeholders for their cooperation and maturity during deliberations and expressed confidence that the APC would emerge stronger from the primary process. He urged party members to remain united and committed as the party positions itself for victory in the 2027 general elections.
