2027 Presidency: Jonathan Faces Heavy Risks If He Loses – Rhodes-Vivour
According to Ireporter Online, the Labour Party’s 2023 governorship candidate in Lagos State, Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour, has reacted to speculations that former President Goodluck Jonathan may stage a comeback in 2027. Reports indicate that some influential members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) are lobbying Jonathan to contest the presidential election on the party’s platform.
Speaking in an interview, Rhodes-Vivour said northern politicians backing Jonathan are comfortable with his single-term limit, which they believe makes him an attractive candidate. He, however, expressed reservations about Jonathan’s chances, stressing that his eligibility could face legal hurdles since he had already taken the oath of office twice.
Rhodes-Vivour further noted that many Nigerians consider it the South’s turn to produce the next president after eight years of a northern leader, adding that President Bola Tinubu’s administration has worsened divisions in the country. According to him, Jonathan’s inability to serve more than one term makes him appealing to the North, but it also carries risks to his political legacy if he fails to win.
He cautioned that Jonathan, who has already served for about six and a half years as president, stands to lose significantly if he returns to the race and is defeated, particularly given the current makeup of the Supreme Court and the judiciary.
