2027: Sowore Vows To Restore Fuel Subsidy If Elected President

The presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), Omoyele Sowore, has pledged to restore fuel subsidy if elected president in the 2027 general election, arguing that the policy could help cushion the economic pressure facing Nigerians.

Sowore made the promise during an interview on ARISE TV on Tuesday while outlining his proposed solutions to the country’s economic challenges. When asked whether his administration would reinstate petrol subsidy, the AAC candidate responded in the affirmative.

According to IREPORTER Online, Sowore argued that despite the Federal Government’s claim that fuel subsidy had been removed, other forms of government intervention were still being used to support the economy, including measures aimed at stabilising the naira.

He alleged that currency support was being carried out through what he described as less visible subsidy arrangements, insisting that Nigerians deserved greater transparency from the government regarding its economic policies.

Sowore also challenged the argument that subsidy was inherently harmful, noting that governments in different parts of the world provide various forms of support to vulnerable citizens.

The AAC presidential candidate further argued that Nigeria’s subsidy system had historically benefited wealthy individuals more than ordinary citizens. He pointed to customs waivers granted to importers as an example of what he described as preferential economic support for the affluent.

Sowore also linked the removal of petrol subsidy to the depreciation of the naira and the worsening economic conditions experienced by Nigerians. He maintained that the policy change had contributed to increased economic hardship and reduced purchasing power.

According to him, any government that seeks to address poverty must move away from what he described as outdated approaches and focus on policies capable of improving the living conditions of ordinary Nigerians.

He said an administration under his leadership would pursue fundamental economic changes aimed at addressing the underlying causes of poverty and improving the welfare of citizens.
