You’re On Your Own” – Aisha Yesufu Reveals Obi’s Message Ahead Of 2027
A chieftain of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Aisha Yesufu, has recalled a conversation she had with the party’s presidential candidate, Peter Obi, regarding his pledge to serve only one term if elected President in 2027.
According to Ireporter Online, Yesufu discussed Obi’s position during an interview with Advocacy for Good Governance on Monday, explaining why the former Anambra State governor has consistently maintained that he would spend only four years in office.
Yesufu said Obi had repeatedly expressed his willingness to serve a single term, including during his 2023 presidential campaign under the Labour Party.
Obi also reiterated the position in July 2026, stating that his intention would be to serve for four years and leave office after completing the term.
Recalling a personal conversation with the presidential candidate, Yesufu said she once questioned why Obi would voluntarily limit his presidency to one term when the Constitution allows a president to seek re-election.
According to her, Obi responded that a single term would be sufficient to establish the structures and implement the reforms he believes Nigeria needs.
Yesufu said the conversation reinforced her conviction that Obi’s one-term pledge was not merely an electoral strategy designed to win public support.
She noted that Obi had expressed a similar position before the 2023 presidential election, suggesting that the commitment had remained consistent over time.
The NDC chieftain further stressed the importance of political leaders honouring commitments made to citizens, particularly promises concerning the exercise and duration of political power.
Yesufu maintained that Obi’s position reflects his belief that meaningful reforms and institutional changes can be initiated within a single four-year administration.
