$668K In Aid: IOM Steps In To Alleviate Nigeria’s Worsening Flood Crisis

In a press release on Thursday, the IOM confirmed that this funding will aid localized humanitarian efforts by Relief Rescue Initiative, Safer World Foundation, and the Community Engagement and Social Development Initiative in Jigawa, Katsina, and Bauchi. These areas are heavily affected by floods, impacting tens of thousands of lives.
“We are deeply grateful to USAID’s Bureau of Humanitarian Assistance, whose generous support of the RRF makes this response possible,” said IOM Nigeria’s Chief of Mission ad interim, Paola Pace. “Their contributions enable IOM and local partners to deliver crucial assistance, helping communities recover from the devastating floods.”
More than 1.3 million Nigerians across 34 states have been impacted by flooding in 2024, with over 320 fatalities and an estimated 258,000 hectares of farmland destroyed. Flooding has also displaced over 740,000 people.
In October, IOM allocated an initial $1.8 million to nine NGOs for emergency flood relief. The recent allocation brings IOM’s 2024 flood response funding to more than $2.4 million, targeting essential services including shelter, clean water, sanitation, protection, and multi-purpose cash assistance to over 228,777 people. These interventions aim to address immediate needs and strengthen resilience in affected communities.
IOM’s response involves close coordination with government agencies, local authorities, and humanitarian partners to ensure comprehensive and effective support. The organization remains committed to delivering timely and impactful assistance to communities in need.
