A Giant Of The Creative Industry” — Tinubu Mourns Nollywood Legend Olu Jacobs

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has expressed grief over the death of veteran Nollywood actor and film executive, Oludotun Baiyewu Jacobs, popularly known as Olu Jacobs, who died at the age of 84.

According to reports, the President described the late actor as a towering figure in Nigeria’s creative industry and praised his decades-long contribution to theatre, television and film.

Tinubu, in a statement issued on Wednesday by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, recalled Jacobs’ professional training at the prestigious Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London.

The President noted that Jacobs went on to build a successful career in British television and international cinema before returning to Nigeria, where he became one of the country’s most respected figures in the film industry.

Tinubu also highlighted the numerous honours and awards received by the late actor throughout his career, including the national honour of Member of the Order of the Federal Republic (MFR).

The President described Jacobs as one of Nigeria’s most distinguished actors, whose exceptional talent, discipline and dedication helped inspire generations of actors and filmmakers.

He further praised the late thespian’s ability to bring depth, dignity and authenticity to the characters he portrayed, earning him widespread admiration both in Nigeria and internationally.

“He was a giant of the Nigerian creative industry. His passing is a great loss to Nigeria, the African film industry and the global community of lovers of the performing arts. His remarkable body of work will continue to speak to generations yet unborn,” Tinubu said.

The President also acknowledged the broader contribution of Nigerian creative professionals to the country’s cultural identity, international reputation and economic development, noting that Jacobs played a significant role in shaping that legacy.

Tinubu extended his condolences to Jacobs’ family, particularly his wife, veteran actress Chief Joke Silva, their children and relatives, as well as colleagues in the Nigerian film industry and the wider creative community.

He prayed for the peaceful repose of the late actor’s soul.
