Abba Yusuf’s Bold Pledge: ‘We Will Fight To Return Our Minors Home’ After Arrests
Governor Abba Yusuf of Kano State has pledged to take every necessary measure to return minors, believed to be from Kano, who were recently arrested in connection with the #EndBadGovernance protests.
The protests, which drew participation from multiple regions, resulted in the detention of 72 individuals across Abuja, Kaduna, Gombe, Jos, Katsina, and Kano. These individuals, including several minors,……..CONTINUE READING
were arraigned in a Federal High Court in Abuja on charges of terrorism, arson, and treasonable felony. During the proceedings, four minors reportedly collapsed and required immediate medical attention.
The court granted bail to the defendants, with a set amount of N10 million for each of the 72 individuals. The involvement of minors in these arrests has sparked widespread outrage from politicians, civil society organizations, and concerned citizens. Federal prosecutor Rimazonte Ezekiel insisted that all those arraigned were adults, claiming that “most of them are married men.” However, this was contested by Muyiwa Adejobi, spokesperson for the Nigeria Police Force, who confirmed that the youngest person in custody is just 13 years old.
In response to the situation, Governor Yusuf expressed his distress regarding the detention of teenagers. In a post on X (formerly Twitter), he stated that he has instructed Haruna Dederi, the Kano State Attorney-General and Commissioner of Justice, to take immediate action.
“My attention has been drawn to the appearance of teenagers (some believed to be from Kano) in court today in Abuja,” Yusuf wrote. “The Commissioner of Justice has been directed to act swiftly on this issue. We will do everything possible to ensure their return to Kano, in sha Allah.”
The arrest and arraignment of these minors have ignited a national debate over the treatment of young protesters and raised pressing questions about civil rights in Nigeria.
