Adeyanju Deji Convener Concerned Nigerians

Human rights activist Deji Adeyanju has shared why he would prefer President Bola Tinubu over Peter Obi if the two were to contest in the 2027 elections.

According to IReporter Online, Adeyanju made these remarks during an interview on Channels Television on Friday, emphasizing that his preference is not driven by loyalty to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), but rather by his personal beliefs about democracy, tolerance, and political conduct.

According to IReporter Online, Adeyanju explained that his support for Tinubu stems from concerns about the intolerance he perceives among some of Peter Obi’s supporters, who, in his words, resort to name-calling and label dissenters as enemies or compromised individuals. He stressed that anyone who does not support their candidate is unfairly targeted, which he believes is detrimental to the political environment.

Adeyanju also rejected accusations that he was working to weaken the opposition, insisting that his political choices have always been independent and based on his judgment.

According to IReporter Online, he recounted voting for candidates across party lines in past elections, including Obasanjo in 1999, Goodluck Jonathan in 2011 and 2015, and Omoyele Sowore in 2023.

He further condemned the behavior of some Obi supporters during the last election, citing instances of online intimidation and harassment of those who supported other candidates. Adeyanju recalled the case of actress Joke Silva, who faced attacks simply for supporting Tinubu, illustrating his call for a more respectful political culture.

Finally, Adeyanju urged for unity among opposition forces, warning that a divided front only benefits the APC. He acknowledged that while Obi’s candidacy initially excited him as a potential breakthrough for the South-East, his enthusiasm diminished due to the negative conduct he observed. He reiterated his commitment to issue-based politics and expressed hope for a democratic environment free from extremism.
