Afenifere Urges Nigerians To Trust Judicial Process In Dele Farotimi Vs. Afe Babalola Dispute
The pan-Yoruba socio-cultural and political organization Afenifere has called on Nigerians to allow the judicial system to impartially handle the criminal defamation charges brought against lawyer Dele Farotimi by the Nigeria Police Force (NPF)…READ MORE…
According to Naija News, these charges stem from a complaint made to the Ekiti Police Command by Chief Afe Babalola, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria and esteemed elder statesman, who alleges that Farotimi’s 104-page book titled Nigeria and its Criminal Justice defames him.
Farotimi, a prominent Nigerian activist, was arrested in Lagos last week and subsequently taken to Ekiti. The complainant, Afe Babalola, who resides in Ado Ekiti, Ekiti State, asserts that Farotimi’s widely circulated book damages his reputation.
On Monday, Farotimi was presented before a Magistrate Court in Ado Ekiti, where Magistrate Abayomi Adeosun denied his bail request and ordered him to remain in custody until December 10.
In response to this situation, portions of the Nigerian populace are planning large-scale protests in Lagos State, the Federal Capital Territory, and Ekiti State on December 10, demanding Farotimi’s immediate release.
Afenifere’s National Publicity Secretary, Comrade Jare Ajayi, emphasized that the legal system allows both parties in a dispute to present their cases. Afenifere stressed the importance of protecting the interests of both parties and the public, ensuring that justice is served fairly.
Ajayi stated, “The court is uniquely capable of determining how best to protect these interests and to ensure that prosecution upholds the principles of justice.” He urged all involved to avoid making statements or undertaking actions that might disturb public order, while also calling on the government to uphold the rule of law.
Afenifere reiterated that the courtroom is the appropriate setting for resolving rights infringements and pursuing redress as established by the Nigerian constitution. “We encourage all parties to demonstrate full obedience to and respect for the rule of law,” the spokesperson concluded.
