AFN Reclaims Ofili As World Athletics Blocks Switch, Turkey Set To Challenge
According to Ireporter Online, the President of the Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN), Tonobok Okowa, has expressed openness to the return of sprint star Favour Ofili to Nigeria following World Athletics’ rejection of her proposed nationality switch to Turkey. The decision comes nearly a year after Ofili indicated her intention to leave the Nigerian system in 2025, citing dissatisfaction with the handling of her career by domestic athletics authorities.
World Athletics’ Nationality Review Panel recently declined the transfer request submitted by the Turkish Athletics Federation after reviewing multiple applications linked to a broader recruitment drive ahead of the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games. The governing body said the move raised concerns about the integrity of international competition and the potential undermining of athlete development in home countries. It also noted that although Ofili’s grievances were considered, they did not outweigh regulatory concerns guiding the decision.
Ofili, who last represented Nigeria at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, had already obtained Turkish citizenship and signed long-term arrangements as part of her planned switch. However, under World Athletics rules, she remains ineligible to represent Turkey at major championships, though she can still compete in invitational events such as the Diamond League.
In response, the AFN leadership has welcomed the possibility of reconciliation, urging unity and renewed support for the athlete as Nigeria seeks to strengthen its sprint program ahead of future international competitions. Meanwhile, Turkey is expected to challenge the ruling at the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), escalating the matter into a legal dispute that could determine the final outcome of the transfer process.
