Africa Must Break Free From Aid Dependency

A recent example is President Bola Tinubu’s provision of N700 billion to offset the discontinuation of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) by former U.S. President Donald Trump, citing corruption, waste, and abuse. Additionally, Nigeria receives millions in aid for its democratic processes, including €39 million (N17.94 billion in 2023) from the European Union to support the general elections. This funding also allowed the EU to send a delegation that critically assessed the elections conducted by INEC under Professor Mahmood Yakubu.

The issue of aid dependency was discussed at the Financial Times’ Global Risk Roundtable during the World Economic Forum (WEF) in Davos, Switzerland. Representing Nigeria, Vice President Kashim Shettima condemned Africa’s “bowl in hand” approach, arguing that nations should uphold their dignity rather than rely on external support. He emphasized that Africa, rich in natural resources and a youthful population, should focus on self-sufficiency rather than a master-servant relationship with donor countries.

A sovereign nation that depends on foreign aid risks compromising its independence. Even after nearly 65 years of independence, Nigeria still relies on donations to support its democracy, which, in turn, allows foreign entities to influence and critique its electoral processes. This dependency has, in the past, given foreign governments undue influence over Nigeria’s affairs, as seen in the involvement of the Obama administration in the country’s 2015 elections.

Foreign aid has also been linked to the prolonged insurgency in Nigeria, particularly in the North-East, where international organizations have been accused of fueling unrest under the guise of humanitarian assistance. Furthermore, a significant portion of aid funds ends up misappropriated by corrupt individuals, encouraging inefficiency and leaving Africa vulnerable to exploitation by global powers.

Nigeria’s federal and state governments must move beyond mere rhetoric and take decisive steps to end aid dependency. It is time for the nation to reclaim its sovereignty and serve as a model of self-reliance for the rest of Africa.
