African Action Congress Appoints New National Chairman As Sowore Steps Down

According to Ireporter Online, the African Action Congress (AAC) has announced that its 2027 presidential candidate and human rights activist, Omoyele Sowore, has stepped down as the party’s National Chairman following his emergence as the party’s flag bearer.

The party disclosed the development in a statement released on Tuesday shortly after its presidential primary held in Abuja, where Sowore was unanimously endorsed by delegates and party leaders.

In the same announcement, the AAC confirmed the appointment of Samuel Ajeigbe as the new National Chairman of the party, noting that the leadership change takes immediate effect.

The statement read that Sowore had officially resigned his position as National Chairman after securing the party’s presidential ticket, adding that the party had welcomed Ajeigbe to lead its administrative structure moving forward.

Sowore’s resignation came just hours after he clinched the party’s presidential nomination at the primaries, where he was presented with the AAC flag amid celebration from supporters across several states.

In his acceptance speech, he reaffirmed his commitment to the party’s vision of building a “new Nigeria” anchored on accountability, improved governance, and an end to corruption and insecurity. He also commended party members for their resilience despite political pressure and economic hardship.

During the event, Sowore criticised the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), accusing the party of incompetence and political manipulation, while also dismissing claims that the party had over 10 million members who voted for President Bola Tinubu during its presidential primary, insisting the figures were exaggerated.

Political analysts suggest that Sowore’s decision to step down as chairman may be aimed at creating a clearer separation between the party’s administrative leadership and his presidential campaign structure.
