In an interview with ireporteronline , Aguocha highlighted the challenges facing Ndigbo in Nigeria, noting an uneven legal standard that appears to treat the Igbo people differently. He argued that Kanu deserves the same leniency under Section 174 of the 1999 Constitution that was extended to Yoruba Nation activist, Sunday Igboho.

Aguocha shared that he, alongside other lawmakers and Abia State Governor Alex Otti, have met with Attorney General Lateef Fagbemi and are working closely with President Bola Tinubu on the matter.

“I’ve had several discussions with the Attorney General and the Chief of Staff of Mr. President. Although I haven’t yet met directly with the President, he has expressed commitment to assessing both the legal and security implications of Kanu’s release,” Aguocha said.

Governor Otti, after meeting with the President, also expressed optimism regarding the assurances given to him by Mr. President.

Aguocha further explained that Kanu’s release might occur under Section 174 of the Constitution or in line with a recent Supreme Court ruling that supported Kanu’s decision to flee amidst a military raid on his home, deeming his actions justifiable under the circumstances.

“The Supreme Court concluded that his flight was warranted, and therefore his bail should not have been revoked,” Aguocha said. “If granted bail, I am prepared to act as his surety, ensuring he can reunite with his family and receive necessary medical attention,” the Labour Party representative added.
