Aide Sets Record Straight On Bode George’s Position Regarding Nationwide Protest

Bode George, a prominent figure in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has denied claims that he advised Southwest youths to avoid participating in the upcoming nationwide protests. A post circulating on social media falsely attributed to George warned against joining the protests, citing potential violence and unrest.

Femi Obaparusi, George’s personal assistant, confirmed that the post was not authored by George. The misleading message, which included a forged signature, falsely suggested that George had cautioned against participation due to potential risks of loss of life and property damage akin to the #EndSARS protests.

The controversial post, shared widely on WhatsApp, stated: “Here we are in 2024, and the situation remains the same. We are demanding that the sitting President provide a report on 60 years of decay within just one year. It is crucial for the South, particularly the South-West where the President hails from, to make a statement now. Will you support your own or oppose him? I believe we should stand with our own, and the entire South should also stand by their son.”

Obaparusi clarified that George did not write the message, which ended with a false attribution to “Dr. Bode Gbore” dated July 26, 2024.

In a related development, George has urged the Federal Government to seek a peaceful resolution for the planned protest set for August 1. He warned of potential widespread chaos if the protest is mishandled, emphasizing the need for adequate security measures.

The misleading post was initially published by a Facebook user named Bode Gbore and later circulated on WhatsApp, misrepresented as coming from George, the former military governor of Ondo State.

In contrast, Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, has endorsed the planned nationwide protest, emphasizing the need for lawful action. Obi highlighted that the economic hardship and hopelessness are driving factors behind the protests, and urged security agencies to adhere to the law.
