Akpabio Launches Bold 2025–2030 Blueprint To Crush Terrorism In Nigeria

According to Ireporter Online, Senate President Godswill Akpabio on Monday unveiled Nigeria’s Counter Terrorism Strategic Plan 2025–2030, a framework developed by the National Counter Terrorism Centre under the Office of the National Security Adviser. Akpabio described the launch as a defining moment in Nigeria’s security trajectory, stressing that it reaffirmed the nation’s commitment to guaranteeing safety and a peaceful future for its citizens.

In his address, he noted that each generation faces a defining question, and for Nigeria, it is how to secure the nation, protect its people and build lasting stability. He said the newly introduced plan provides a structured vision for overhauling national institutions, modernising security systems, reinforcing resilience and expanding cooperation across government, the private sector, civil society and international allies.

Akpabio explained that insecurity continues to undermine development, with investors withdrawing, schools shutting down and farmers abandoning their fields. He emphasised that the new strategic framework is therefore timely, pragmatic and necessary to address these setbacks.

The Senate President also highlighted the legislature’s role in national security, noting that the 10th National Assembly has passed several key laws on defence, intelligence coordination, cybersecurity and counter-terrorism. He said lawmakers have strengthened institutional mandates, improved inter-agency collaboration and advocated better welfare for security personnel.

However, he cautioned that legislation alone cannot secure the country, calling for sustained investment in manpower, technology, training and long-term strategic planning. He said the new strategy stands out because it embraces a Whole-of-Government and Whole-of-Society approach, placing responsibility not only on government institutions but also on citizens, communities, traditional leaders and global partners.

Representing the National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu, the Coordinator of the National Counter Terrorism Centre, Major General Adamu Laka, stated that the Strategic Plan is the result of extensive research, inter-agency cooperation and broad consultations across ministries, security agencies, academia, civil society groups and international stakeholders. He added that the vision is to position the National Counter Terrorism Centre as a regional hub of excellence for combating terrorism and violent extremism in West Africa and the Sahel.
