All Eyes On Niger! INEC Gears Up For High-Stakes By-Election Amid Political Intrigue
INEC Ready for Niger Assembly By-Election as Political Activities Heat Up — ACCORDING TO IREPORTER ONLINE
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Niger State has announced its full readiness for the upcoming bye-election to fill the vacant legislative seat in the Niger State House of Assembly.
This development comes nearly a year after the death of Hon. Joseph Haruna Sduza, the former lawmaker representing Munya Local Government Area, who passed away following a brief illness in September 2024.
ACCORDING TO IREPORTER ONLINE, the late Sduza, a retired Air Force officer, had served as Chairman of the House Committee on Security and Intelligence before his untimely demise.
At a stakeholders’ meeting held at INEC headquarters in Minna, the State Resident Electoral Commissioner, Alhaji Ahmed Yushau Garki, revealed that political parties have submitted the names of nominated candidates following primary elections conducted between July 17 and 21.
He added that the Munya constituency comprises 11 registration areas, 119 polling units, and a total of 62,459 registered voters.
ACCORDING TO IREPORTER ONLINE, open campaigns are scheduled to commence on August 2 and conclude by August 14, with the by-election set to take place on August 16.
Garki emphasized the importance of peaceful and orderly campaigns, urging political parties to adhere strictly to the electoral timetable and avoid actions that could jeopardize the integrity of the process.
Furthermore, ACCORDING TO IREPORTER ONLINE, a document seen at the commission’s office indicates that a nationwide two-tier Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) will begin next month—with online registration kicking off on August 18 and physical/in-person registration starting on August 25.
These exercises are expected to hold at INEC offices across the country to expand electoral participation ahead of future polls.
