Alleged N10 Billion Fraud: Former Kwara Finance Commissioner, Ademola Banu Accuses EFCC Of Misleading Court For Arrest Warrant
Former Kwara State Finance Commissioner, Ademola Banu, has accused the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) of deceptive practices in securing a warrant for his arrest. Banu’s allegations surfaced in response to charges levied against him and former Governor Abdulfatah Ahmed over alleged misappropriation of N10 billion in public funds……READ ALSO Kwara Ex-Gov, Abdulfatah Ahmed Explains Why EFCC Invited Him
Banu’s legal representatives filed a motion with the Federal High Court in Ilorin, Kwara State, seeking to overturn the arrest warrant issued against him. The motion contends that the EFCC manipulated facts to procure the warrant, alleging that Banu had absconded to the United Kingdom to evade arrest.
Contrary to the EFCC’s assertions, Banu asserts that he was in the United States during the period in question, attending to personal matters and health concerns. He maintains that he returned to Nigeria well before the EFCC’s claim of his departure to the UK.
Banu further argues that there was no basis for the arrest warrant, as he had not been invited for questioning by the EFCC following his discharge in a previous case. He asserts that the charges against him were akin to those previously withdrawn by the EFCC due to their failure to implicate former Governor Ahmed, who enjoyed immunity at the time.
In response, the EFCC contended that the withdrawal of previous charges was due to the former governor’s immunity, which prevented his inclusion in the prosecution. Banu refutes this claim, stating that the immunity had expired before the charges were withdrawn.
Banu’s affidavit challenges the EFCC’s narrative, alleging misrepresentation of facts and urging the court to dismiss the arrest warrant. The case underscores the contentious legal battle surrounding corruption allegations against public officials in Nigeria.
