and extradition to Nigeria in 2021, Kanu has remained in the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS), facing multiple charges of treason and terrorism.

In an open letter dated January 8, 2025, addressed to the governors, the clerics accused them of betraying the collective interest of the Igbo people by failing to press for Kanu’s release.

The letter, signed by Tony Anthony, President-General/International Coordinator, and Tony Osuji, Secretary-General, lamented the governors’ silence on Kanu’s detention.

“The continued incarceration of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu is a disgrace to the Igbo nation. Our governors have failed to champion the release of a leader who has been a voice for the oppressed in the region,” the letter read.

The group further accused the governors of making empty promises and politicizing Kanu’s release, urging all religious leaders to raise their voices on the matter.

“This isn’t just about Nnamdi Kanu; it’s about the dignity and security of Ndi Igbo,” they emphasized.

The letter highlighted that the promises made during the 2023 elections, including the commitment for Kanu’s release, have yet to be fulfilled.
