Okpebholo Exposes LGAs’ Billion-Naira Scandal In Federal Allocations
Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, has raised serious concerns about the mismanagement of ₦83 billion in federal allocations by the state’s 18 local government areas (LGAs) over the past year. Governor Okpebholo made this allegation..Okpebholo Exposes LGAs’ Billion-Naira Scandal In Federal Allocations
during a courtesy visit from Alabi Bliss Oshionogue, the acting Chairman of Akoko-Edo Local Government, along with councillors in Benin.
According to the governor, data from the state Accountant-General’s office revealed that between January and September 2024, the LGAs received over ₦6.5 billion monthly in federal allocations. From October to December 2024, the figure rose to over ₦8 billion monthly.
“Between January and September 2024, the 18 local government councils received more than ₦6.5 billion monthly in allocations. From October to December, they received over ₦8 billion monthly from the Federation Account. Cumulatively, these LGAs, led by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), earned over ₦83 billion in one year,” Okpebholo stated.
The governor highlighted a significant increase in federal allocations under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration, which was intended to drive grassroots development.
“Before Tinubu’s administration, Edo State was receiving ₦3.5 billion monthly in local government allocations. Today, local governments in Edo State are receiving over ₦8 billion monthly. This is specifically allocated for the LGAs,” he said.
Governor Okpebholo expressed frustration over the lack of visible development despite the substantial funds received by the LGAs.
“These chairmen withdrew ₦800 million monthly from local government accounts while schools and infrastructure suffered. They’ve been in office for a year with little to show,” he lamented.
He assured the public that his administration is committed to correcting these issues and prioritizing grassroots development.
“We must move Edo State forward, and no individual will hinder our progress,” Okpebholo declared.
In response, Acting Chairman of Akoko-Edo LGA, Hon. Alabi Bliss Oshionogue, commended the governor for his dedication to grassroots development.
“We are ready to collaborate with the Okpebholo administration to ensure that governance reaches the grassroots and the state progresses,” Oshionogue stated.
