APC Chieftain Blasts Peter Obi: “You Can’t Import Alcohol and Woo the North!”
A prominent member of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Alwan Hassan, has cast doubts over the electability of Peter Obi in the 2027 presidential race, particularly in Nigeria’s northern region. Hassan questioned Obi’s appeal to Northern voters, citing the former governor’s involvement in the alcohol industry as a potential disconnect with the region’s conservative values.
According to Ireporter Online, Hassan made the remarks during a televised political interview, where he criticized Obi for simultaneously seeking the support of Northern voters while also celebrating his business achievements, including the establishment of breweries and importing alcoholic products.
The APC chieftain remarked that such business ventures may not resonate with the values of Northern Nigeria. He also argued that the ruling party’s candidate, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, remains politically unbeatable in the 2027 election cycle.
He was quoted as saying, “Who else do you think would defeat Asiwaju come 2027? Peter Obi is praising himself for building breweries and being the biggest importer of alcohol while asking for the trust of the North. How does that align?”
Hassan further mocked other unnamed politicians whom he described as being financially dependent on their spouses, claiming they are unfit to lead a nation.
Meanwhile, Peter Obi’s recent pledge to serve only a single term if elected in 2027 has sparked criticism from within opposition ranks. A leading youth figure in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Timothy Osadolor, argued that such declarations undermine the constitutional provisions for presidential tenures.
Osadolor emphasized that the Nigerian Constitution allows for a president to serve up to two terms and described Obi’s promise as politically unnecessary and legally unfounded. He urged that leadership campaigns should focus on competence, vision, and nation-building, rather than symbolic gestures aimed at swaying public sentiment.
