Oguruguru was arrested on February 20, 2024, for allegedly attacking Ubong Effiong Ubek in Agudama-Epie, located in the Yenagoa Local Government Area of Bayelsa State. Reports indicated that the victim lost consciousness following the alleged assault by the governor’s aide.

He faced charges before Justice I. A. Orukari, with five counts that included conspiracy, attempted murder, assault causing harm, serious assault, and malicious damage.

Oguruguru pleaded not guilty to all charges. However, the prosecution presented six witnesses and submitted seven pieces of evidence to support their case.

In a judgment delivered on Tuesday, Justice Orukari stated that the evidence presented by the prosecution successfully established the assault charges against Oguruguru beyond reasonable doubt.

The judge dismissed the three counts of attempted murder due to insufficient evidence. In an allocutus on behalf of his client, Oguruguru’s lawyer, Abadiofoni, requested leniency, arguing that Oguruguru was a first-time offender.

However, the prosecution’s counsel, D.J. Olubowale, countered the allocutus, asserting that only the defendant had the right to make such a plea. Oguruguru subsequently asked the court to show mercy, highlighting his role as the primary provider for his young family and elderly mother.

In his verdict, Justice Orukari sentenced Oguruguru to three years in prison for count one, with an option for a N250,000 fine, and an additional three years for count three, also with a N250,000 fine, to be served concurrently. The judge noted Oguruguru’s apparent remorse and the fact that he was a first-time offender as contributing factors to the sentencing decision.
