Benue Killings: Diaspora Association Condemns Violence In Benue Communities

A socio-cultural group of Benue South Idoma natives based in the United States, the Idoma Association USA, has expressed deep concern over the ongoing killings in their ancestral communities in Benue State. The group specifically lamented the alarming violence in areas like Apa and Agatu, which have seen a disturbing rise in attacks.

During its 28th annual convention in New Jersey, the group’s President, Dr. Edwin Ochai, emphasized the severe impact of insecurity on the region’s development. He pointed out that the fear and instability caused by these senseless acts of violence are hindering economic progress and discouraging both local and foreign investment.

“These senseless acts of violence not only claim precious lives but also sow fear and instability among our people,” Ochai stated. “Without security, our dreams of economic prosperity and social progress remain out of reach.”

Dr. Ochai also called on Idoma natives abroad to invest in the youth back home, urging them to create opportunities that would deter young people from destructive paths and instead guide them toward a productive future.

The Och’Idoma of Idoma, Elaigwu Odogbo, also addressed the gathering, commending the association for their continued commitment to preserving Idoma cultural identity and supporting their homeland. He noted the recent challenges faced by the Idoma kingdom due to renewed attacks by criminal elements, which have displaced thousands and caused significant suffering.

The Deputy Governor of Benue State, Dr. Sam Odeh, reassured the diaspora group that the state government has not neglected the Benue South Senatorial District. He responded to concerns about perceived bias in the allocation of projects, affirming that plans are in place to initiate several development projects in the region soon.
