a press briefing in Makurdi on Monday, following a courtesy visit to the Chief Medical Director of the Benue State University Teaching Hospital (BSUTH).

Vembe commended Governor Hyacinth Alia’s administration for its consistent payment of pensions since taking office, noting a significant departure from past challenges. However, he appealed to the governor to address lingering issues, including unpaid pension arrears and the inadequacy of current pension amounts.

“Governor Alia has been prompt with payments since assuming office, and we deeply appreciate this. Yet, some pensioners still earn as little as ₦2,000 in today’s economy,” Vembe lamented.

He further urged the governor to consider increasing pensions, emphasizing that such a move would align with the administration’s ongoing efforts to implement the minimum wage for civil servants.

The chairman also highlighted the backlog of unpaid pensions, amounting to 96 months for local government retirees and 40 months for state pensioners, urging swift action to address the matter.

Free Medical Care for Pensioners
Dr. Stephen Hwande, Chief Medical Director of BSUTH, praised the state government’s commitment to improving pensioners’ welfare. He assured the retirees that their concerns would be relayed to the governor and commended BSUTH’s initiative to provide free medical care to pensioners, a gesture aimed at improving their quality of life.

Hwande encouraged the government to extend healthcare access to grassroots pensioners, reducing their need to travel long distances for medical services.
