[BREAKING] Coup: Falana Advises ECOWAS On What To Do To Niger

Falana

On Tuesday, Femi Falana, SAN, urged the Authority of Heads of State and Government of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) to impose more stringent sanctions on Niger and take measures to ensure their effectiveness, given the refusal of the coup plotters to relinquish power.

This call comes after ECOWAS declared Niger’s airspace a no-flight zone and gave the military junta one week to hand over power, warning that the use of force was a possibility.

The 15-nation ECOWAS demanded the immediate release and reinstatement of Niger’s elected president, Mohamed Bazoum, who has been in military custody since the coup.

Falana expressed his opinion that suspending Niger from ECOWAS was insufficient and urged the leaders of the regional body not to attend international conferences with coup plotters, referring to a recent incident during the Russia-Africa Summit in St. Petersburg, Russia.

These calls were made by Falana during a paper titled “Unconstitutional Change of Governments: the Role of Bar Associations,” which he delivered at a two-day conference of the West African Bar Association (WABA) in Accra, Ghana. He referred to the recent overthrow of the Mohamed Bazoum administration by Gen Abdourahmane Tchiani, the head of the presidential guards’ unit, who declared himself the ruler of Niger’s new regime.
